What Is Asthma Injection Therapy – And Is It Right For You?

By JuliaFebruary 15, 2024 Health

Asthma is a chronic respiratory condition affecting millions of people worldwide. While traditional inhalers have been the cornerstone of asthma management, recent advances in medical science have introduced injection therapies that offer a new dimension in the treatment of this condition. Learn more about the different types of asthma injection therapy and how these new treatment options can help you cope with your asthma symptoms.

Different Types of Asthma Injection Therapy

  1. Biologics in Asthma Treatment

One of the groundbreaking developments in asthma management is the use of biologic medications. These are injected substances derived from living organisms that specifically target components of the immune system involved in the inflammatory response of asthma. Monoclonal antibodies are a common form of biologics used in asthma treatment. They target specific molecules such as IgE, IL-5, or IL-4, which play a crucial role in asthma inflammation.

For instance, omalizumab targets IgE, reducing its ability to bind to mast cells and trigger allergic reactions. Mepolizumab and benralizumab, on the other hand, target IL-5 and are effective in reducing eosinophils, a type of white blood cell associated with asthma exacerbations.

  1. Bronchial Thermoplasty

Bronchial Thermoplasty is a non-pharmacological injection treatment for asthma that involves the controlled application of heat to the airway walls. This procedure is usually performed through a bronchoscope, and it aims to reduce excessive airway smooth muscle, which is a common feature in individuals with severe asthma.

By targeting the smooth muscle, bronchial thermoplasty helps to decrease airway constriction and improve overall lung function. This treatment is typically reserved for individuals with severe, uncontrolled asthma who have not responded well to traditional therapies.

  1. Dupilumab

Dupilumab is another biologic medication that has shown promise in the treatment of asthma. It targets the interleukin-4 receptor alpha (IL-4Rα), inhibiting the signaling pathways associated with Th2 inflammation. Dupilumab is particularly beneficial for patients with moderate to severe asthma and elevated levels of eosinophils.

This injection therapy has been found to reduce exacerbations, improve lung function, and enhance overall quality of life for individuals with inadequately controlled asthma.

  1. Corticosteroid Injections

For acute asthma exacerbations, healthcare providers may administer corticosteroid injections to rapidly reduce inflammation and restore normal breathing. While oral or inhaled corticosteroids are more commonly prescribed, injections may be preferred in situations where immediate and high-dose intervention is necessary.

Corticosteroid injections are not typically used for long-term asthma management due to the risk of side effects associated with prolonged systemic corticosteroid use. However, they play a vital role in emergency situations and severe asthma attacks.

Asthma injection treatments represent a significant stride in the quest for more targeted and effective therapies. Biologics, bronchial thermoplasty, and corticosteroid injections offer diverse approaches to asthma management, catering to individuals with varying degrees of severity and responsiveness to traditional treatments.
